Youth Initiative Program (YIP)

MEGT’s Youth Initiative Program is a unique program of community services which offers school students with valuable training to prepare them for future employment.

We provide these services to students through a number of educational sector associations and committees.

Students have opportunities to take part in a range of programs.

Pre- Employment Module

The Pre-employment training module provided as part of our Youth Initiative Program is an interactive class advising students on how to begin thinking about a career pathway, with exercises on constructing an effective resume and cover letter, as well as advising on interview skills.

Aimed at: Year 9 -10 students

Duration: 100 minutes

Interview Skills

MEGT’s Youth Initiative Program includes training in job Interview skills, a program giving school students insight into the interview process, learning how to prepare for a job interview, how to behave during the interview and steps to take after an interview.

Aimed at: Year 10 -12 students

Duration: 50 minutes

Safe@Work

Safe@Work is a fun interactive class, which delivers a compulsory unit for students undertaking work experience or structured workplace learning in Victoria. It will assist students with their knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace.

Aimed at: Year 10 students or any students undertaking work placement or work experience.

Duration: 150 minutes

Topics include:

  • Introducing health and safety responsibilities
  • Personal safety
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
  • Safe manual handling
  • Hazardous substances and dangerous goods
  • Noise
  • Electricity
  • Mechanical equipment
  • Falls from heights
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Dealing with an emergency
  • Health and safety laws
  • The duties of employers
  • The duties of employees
  • Health and safety representatives and committees

Winning the Job

In the Winning the Job program, students learn how to design and individualise resumes and cover letters and tailor their personal presentation when responding to a particular job advertisement.

Aimed at: Year 11 – 12 students wishing to gain employment.

Duration: 100 minutes

Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training

The Responsible Service of Alcohol program  provides school students with the knowledge and awareness necessary to responsibly serve alcohol in licensed premises.

Duration: 4 hours

Topics include:

  • Facts about alcohol, its effects and the associated problems with excessive alcohol consumption 
  • Alcohol and the law
  • Providing service to customers
  • Handling difficult customers

Follow Workplace Hygiene Procedures (SITHXOHS002A) course

Follow Workplace Hygiene Procedures provides school students with the skills and knowledge required to apply good hygiene procedures within a range of service industry operations.

Duration: 4 hours

Topics include:

  • How to follow hygiene procedures and identify hygiene hazards
  • Reporting any personal health issues
  • Preventing food and other contamination
  • Preventing cross contamination by washing hands

Upon successful completion, you receive a Statement of Attainment showing that you have been awarded the nationally recognised qualification, SITHXOHS002A Follow Workplace Hygiene Procedures.

Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee (SITHFAB012A) course

The Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee program provides students with the skills and knowledge to extract and serve espresso coffee using a commercial espresso machine.

Duration: 5 hours

Topics include:

  • Organise and prepare work areas
  • Provide customer service and advise customers on espresso coffee
  • Select and grind coffee
  • Extract coffee
  • Texture milk
  • Serve and present espresso coffee
  • Clean and maintain espresso machines

Upon completion you will receive a nationally accredited certificate for SITHFAB012A Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee.

Work Safely in the Construction Industry CPCCOHS1001A course

Widely known as the white card program, this course is required for students to work in the construction industry in Victoria. It provides students with personal awareness of Occupational Health and safety (OHS) legislative requirements, and the basic principles of risk management and preventing injury and illness in the construction industry.

Duration: 6 hours

Topics include:

  • Identify OHS legislative requirements
  • Identify construction hazards and control measures
  • Identify OHS communication and reporting processes
  • Identify OHS incident response procedures

Upon completion of the construction induction study unit component, you will receive a Victorian Construction Induction Card issued by WorkSafe (required to work in the construction industry).
